Playing free and loose with synchronicity, Jef Bourgeau has pulled together a sort of prequel to his Art as Logo series from the 1990s. Throwing art into reverse, he has recently created a group of preliminary diagrams and sketches for paintings now 20 years old.

"Jef Bourgeau believes that proper ‘branding’ is elemental to the promotion, sale and distribution of art. In his 1991-94 series, Art as Logo, he reduced a group of famous artists to one simple icon or logo each. In these barebone b&w paintings he is capable of making us see Donald Judd in a simple chest of drawers. While he evokes Picasso in American Guernica with the silhouettes of four strikers and union men in suits and fedoras beating each other up with nightsticks."
